WHAT'S A SLOT? You have an connection to the internet that has a certain bandwidth (56 Kb/s or something faster). Now you can allow several people to download from you at the same time. They will have to share your bandwidth with each other, your downloads, and any other program you have running that's using the internet. So if you have a 56k connection, no programs but dc running, 1 download and 2 uploads this means: your download gets 56/3 = 16kb/s, and so do each of the uploads. So the more uploads you have, the slower they become. That's where slots come into play: dc divides your bandwidth into slots. If you give 2 slots (you can change that in your settings), this means that 2 people, but not more, can download at the same time from you. You can open additional slots for anyone by increasing the number of slots in your settings (remember that this might slow them down painfully!!), or open an extra slot for someone specific by right-clicking on that person's "head", and choose "grant extra slot" from the popup menu. This extra slot will only be there for the current session, so if either of you disconnects, you'll have to grant the slot again (if you want to). WHAT'S A SLUT? "slut" is used in this hub to refer to slots, and it's secondary meaning is the one you'll find in any dictionary :P HOW DO I FIND OUT HOW FAST MY CONNECTION IS? You can find out how fast your connection is by moving your mouse over the two little computers at the bottom-right of your screen. I SEE SEVERAL GUYS THAT ARE BEHIND A WALL. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? It means that they're passive. I SEE SOME GUYS WITH A KEY NEXT TO THEIR HEAD. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Those guys are moderators, a.k.a. mods. I SEE SOME GUYS THAT ARE GREEN, AND SOME ARE BLUE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? The green guys use dc, and the blue guys use dc++. It doesn't mean anything for your downloads. CAN I BE CONNECTED TO MORE THAN ONE HUB AT A TIME? Technically, you can. Simply type in the address of the hub you want to connect to in the "publich hubs" window and hit enter. Remember however, that every down- and upload consumes bandwidth. For this reason, most hubs don't like their members to be in more than one hub at a time. You might get kicked or disconnected for that reason. HOW DO I TALK PRIVATELY TO SOMEONE? By right-clicking on that person's "head", and choosing "send private message" from the popup menu. A new chat window will pop up, and you can talk to this person. You can close that window any time you wish, but if this person answers still, the window will pop up again. WHAT'S A PM? pm stands short for "private message" WHAT'S MAIN? main stands short for the main chat you can see when you connect to the hub. Every member of the hub can see what you write there (you write by typing in the little bar below it and hitting "enter"). HOW DO I GET SOMEONE'S FILE LIST? By right-clicking on that person's "head", and choosing "get file list" from the popup menu. HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT *ALL* THE FILES THAT ARE AVAILABLE IN THE HUB? Not at all, since not all members of the hub are present 24/7, neither are they sharing the same files all the time (blame it on them ;) ). You'll have to browse through a few file lists to get an overview of what's about available, or use the search function. HOW DO I SEARCH? By clicking the icon that looks like a magnifying glass. Type in whatever you're looking for, and hit "enter". You will see the results for it - note that it lists user, and information on how fast their connection is. It works just like any other search, and you probably wouldn't be here if you don't know how they work. HOW DO I DOWNLOAD? Once you "see" a file (either on someone's file list or in the search window), simply double-click on it. You can alternatively right-click on that file and choose "download" from the popup menu. You can download entire folders (and that's better than downloading every single file because you will know where "04 - paradise city.mp3" belongs...) You will see that file from then on until it has downloaded completely in your download queue. When it has completed download, it vanishes from there. You can see you download queue by clicking on the fourth icon from the right at the top bar of dc++. I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING WHEN I DO A SEARCH WHAT'S WRONG? Try choosing "passive" in your settings. I CAN'T GET A PERSON'S FILE LIST OR I CAN'T DOWNLOAD FROM A PERSON. Try choosing "passive" in your settings. If you are passive, note that you cannot exchange files (including file lists) with a passive person. WHAT'S THE THING WITH BEING ACTIVE AND PASSIVE? In your settings, you have to choose between active and passive. Actually, you don't really have a choice: Your computer has a unique address, called an IP. That thing changes periodically, or every time you connect to the internet. You cannot choose an IP on the internet. Since that address is unique, anyone can address your computer. This is a security issue, and also the reason why certain programs or hardware keep your computer from telling everyone and anyone its IP. Such software includes certain firewalls, the hardware is mostly a router. So if you're at work or school, you probably are behind such a router. The thing is that dc needs that IP to make a connection - at least one of the parties has to tell their IP. So for you this means: The following people can exchange files (including file lists, as this is, after all, a file): active and active, active and passive, passive and active, but NOT passive and passive. WHAT CAN I DO TO BECOME ACTIVE? If you really want to do this, you can turn off your firewall, and try again. If it doesn't work, there is probably a router between you and the internet which keeps you from being active. You can't change that, and have to cope with it. Don't forget to turn on your firewall again, as turnig it off doens't change anything but invite hackers. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CHOOSE "ACTIVE" ALTHOUGH YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT TELL ITS IP? You can't get anyone's filelist, and search won't give you any results. Change to "passive". WHAT DOES "NO SLOTS AVAILABLE" MEAN? It means that all the slots of the person you want to download from are taken - imagine a bitch with her puppies. All places to drink are taken, and so you'll have to wait for someone to finish drinking/downloading. Your dc periodically tries to get a slot from that bit... erhm... person, and will grab a free one as soon as it can. You can however force your dc to try by right-clicking on the connection (in the window at the bottom of you dc), and selecting "force attempt" from the popup menu. It won't make any slot more likely to become free, but only make your dc see if it's free. HOW CAN I SPEED UP DOWNLOADS? By taking away everything else that consumes bandwidth: Any internet radio, other file sharing programs, by having less downloads at a time, by giving less slots. Remember however that there is a limit of 2 slots at least at sladdi's hub - you get disconnected if you don't have at least 2 of them open. You can also go and get yourself a cable connection, which is the better idea in any case :P If it's not you that's being the bottleneck, you can't do much but wait and hope for someone with a faster connection to show up and share that file. HOW DO I CANCEL A DOWNLOAD? Go to your download queue, and right-click on the file you want to cancel. Select "remove" from the popup menu. If the download was running while you did that, you'll have to close the connection. You do so by right-clicking on the connection you see for that file at the bottom part of your dc++, and selecting "close connection". This may take several tries/min. Note that parts of that file might already have downloaded, so you should check the folder you are downloading to, and remove that unfinished file. Note also that removing a file from the queue makes dc forget everything about that file - how much you have, how much you lack, who you got it from, and so on and so forth. So you should only remove files you don't want to have at all. HOW DI I PAUSE A DOWNLOAD? Go to your download queue, and right-click on the file you want to cancel. Select "Priority -> Paused" from the popup menu. If the download was running while you did that, you'll have to close the connection. You do so by right-clicking on the connection you see for that file at the bottom part of your dc++, and selecting "close connection". This may take several tries/min. WHAT DOES THE "DOWNLOAD TO" FUNCTION DO? You can choose "download to" by right-clicking any file you "see" in search or in a file list (from the popup menu). From the dialog box that pops up after choosing this, you can choose any destination folder on your computer where you want that file to "land". You can also choose a file that's on your computer to download to. The result of doing so is the following: Imagine two guys in the hub who have the exactly same file. One of them might even have downloaded it from the other. Let's say this file was called "gnr- dont cry". Now one of them doesn't like that and renames it "dontcry". dc now does not see that these two files are actually the same - dc only accepts files to be "same" if they have the exactly same name and file size. If you are sure about those files being the same, you can choose now the "dontcry" file and select "download to" the "gnr - dont cry" file. This will have the same result as if you were downloading from more than one person. HOW DO I DOWNLOAD FROM MORE THAN ONE PERSON? In a hub, it is likely that more than one person has the exactly same file (after all, they're all downloading from each other). You can download only from one of them at a time, but if one of them is not online at the moment, you can download from another one. That's the reason why you should keep the "Always search for alternate sources" option in your settings turned on. It will not result in that file having any "bumps" or visible seams - dc divides every file in several "chunks", and remembers how many of them you already have and how many you still lack - and thus also which chunk to ask for next. You can also go to your download queue, right-click on a file, and select "search for alternate sources". THE GUY I'M DOWNLOADING FRMO ISN'T ONLINE OR DOESN'T SHARE THE FILE ANYMORE. WHAT CAN I DO? If you don't have the "Always search for alternate sources" option turned on, you can go to your download queue, right-click the file you want so bad, and select "search for alternate sources" to continue downloading from another user (one that's online, for example :P). Besides for that, you can only wait for that person (or any person sharing that file) to come back. HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY DOWNLOAD QUEUE? You should have a look at your download queue every now and then. Compare it with the folder(s) you are downloading to. All files that are in your folder, but not in the queue, have finished downloading. Files that you can see both in the queue and in the folder have not completed downloading yet. Files you can only see in the queue haven't started downloading yet. You can sort your list by giving certain files or folders priorities, or set some files on "paused" - if you're short on memory on your hard drive for example. Don't forget to check whether you still have enough space left on your hard drive for all your downloads. There are versions of dc that make either dc, the computer, or both crash if your hd gets out of space. And your hd will be full faster that you'd think! The only cure to that is a) buy a bigger hd, b) burn the stuff you have completed, and delete it from the hd. Besides for that, you can't do much but have a look at your queue and enjoy it becoming shorter :P HOW DO I SET PRIORITIES AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DO THAT? When you go to your download queue, and right-click on any file or folder you see there, you can select "priority" from the popup menu. "Paused" will make dc to wait downloading that file. But it remembers what you already have, and what you still lack. Removing a file from the queue will make dc forget all that information, and you would have to use the "download to" function to complete that file. All other options ("lowest" to "highest") will sort your list. Imagine you wanted to download "patience" and "reckless life" from the same user. Now if you set the priority of the "patience" file higher than the priority of the "reckless life" file, your dc will attempt to get the "patience" file first. Setting priorities does not help getting slots faster - if that was so, everybody would set their priority to "highest", and we would end up where we started from. With slots, it's simply "first come, first serve". Changing a folder's priority changes the priority of every file and/or folder it contains. WHAT HAPPENS IF I LEAVE THE HUB? Your downloads and uploads will continue, but only those who are running. So if you have any connections that say "no slots available", those will disappear. You will also not be able to talk privately to any member of that hub any more (you will get the "user went offline" error - you can see that in the grey part right underneath the chat window). CAN I CLOSE THE MAIN CHAT WITHOUT GETTING DISCONNECTED FROM THE HUB? No. closing the main chat window will result in a disconnect from the hub. But you can minimise it or ignore it as you can with every other window you have encountered on your pc so far. WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO SHUT DOWN MY COMPUTER AND STILL HAVE DOWNLOADS RUNNING? Nothing much :) . As soon as you turn your dc on again, it will try to continue all downloads in your queue that are not set on "paused". You won't notice that the download was interrupted when you see the file once it has completed downloading. Note that there are file formats such as .avi which don't allow you to view or use them if they're not completed. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE STUFF ON MY NOTEPAD IF I CLOSE DC++? It stays there for you to use in any future dc++ session :) WHY ARE THERE FILES IN MY FOLDER THAT ARE INCOMPLETE? Because the download hasn't finished yet, or because you have downloaded a file that was incomplete. To avoid this confusion with other members, only share files of which you are positive that they are complete. Otherwise people will attempt to download incomplete files, and that just sucks. I GET DISCONNECTED FROM THE HUB - WHAT'S WRONG? The hub asks for certain things - such as you to have two slots open at least. There are programs who check this periodically, and disconnect you if you don't obey one of those rules. You will get a message with the reason of the disconnect if that happens. Change what is asks for, and come back. If you get disconnected for the reason "this hub is full", then you'll have to wait. Your dc periodically tries to reconnect to the hub if you don't close its window. "hub is full" means that there is a maximum number of members in the hub, and that there is no space for you at the moment. It's nothing personal, don't worry. If you get disconnected without any reason, simply try reconnecting (the green-arrows-icon). The hub sometimes needs a restart, and kicks all its members. Don't freak out, shit like that just happens. I GOT KICKED FROM THE HUB - WHY? When you get kicked, you get kicked by a mod. If he or she doesn't give a reason (which you would see popping up in your face), you most probably didn't obey to one of the hub's rules, or have been behaving like an asshole. Either way, you won't be able to connect to the hub for the next 10 minutes, which gives you time to fix whatever you were doing wrong. WHAT HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO GET BANNED FROM THE HUB? They can't connect to the hub any more, and we're rid of them. WHAT IS FTP? FTP means File Transfer Protocol. It is similar to HTTP, and is used, you guessed it, to exchange files between computers. Some internet browsers "talk" FTP (internet explorer does). Simply type ftp://whateveraddress if you have an ftp address as you would type http://www.gnronline.com in your browser. Sometimes this does not work, with addresses that ask for a password for example. You need a program called a "ftp client" to view such sites. An example of an ftp client is WS ftp, which is available freely in its lite version (try google.com for ws ftp lite). -------------------- !FaqHub HUB FAQ RULES - IF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THEM, YOU GET KICKED: Rule 1 share at least 1 GB of Guns N' Roses media. Rule 2 open at least 2 upload slots! Rule 3 do not beg for slots! Rule 4 check out www.newgnr.com :D REQUESTS: Request 1 Clean up your files please (no system files), do not share much of NON Guns N' Roses stuff. Request 2 Put all your GNR files in one or more folders, which are only with GNR stuff. Request 3 Create folders for NEW GNR files, and other folders for OLD GNR files. Request 4 Try to give as much upload slots as you think fits to your connection. (cable & DSL ~ 3) WHAT DOES "UTFSF" MEAN? Use The Fuckin' Search Function. We mean that! WHAT'S A SOUNDBOARD? A soundboard is the thing where all the signals from the instruments at a concert end up. Someone recorded some 2002 shows from the soundboard. So if a file takes that attribute, it means that it's taken from there. They usually have high quality, because the only crowd noise you can hear comes in over the microphones. MAIN LOOKS REALLY MESSED UP - ARE YOU GUYS ALL INSANE? basically, yeah, we are. but if main looks messed up, most probably a game of trivia is running. because you're not a player, you can't see the questions but only the answers the players give. join the trivia game by typing !TrivJoin . WHAT'S TRIVIA? Trivia is a game that entertains us when we've got nothing to do. ---->See !FaqTriv WHO'S SLADDI? sladdi is the dude who "owns" the hub, and thus "the main guy to be nice to". He's the one to flame if it crashes, he's the only one who can ban people or make them mods (or both...). sladdi also owns www.newgnr.com . if you haven't checked it out yet, be aware that this is our 4th rule - and you get kicked for not following the rules :D WHAT ARE MODS? If you're using dc++, you can see the mods on top of the user list with a key next to their head. Those guys are responsible for kickin assholes and leechers, so you better be nice to them :) Mods are people who somehow showed that they're good people, and were at the right place at the right time when sladdi needed another mod - so don't beg to become one... WHAT DO PEOPLE GET KICKED FOR? Anything that doesn't please some mod that happens to be there at that time... e.g. if you flame/insult/... other people, don't follow rules, ask for it, ... HOW TO AND HOW NOT TO... if somebody doesn't answer you, they most probably are either not staring at the screen at the moment or don't want to talk - so simply leave them alone. Try to be nice to the people in here, and they will be nice to you. Accept that there might people who don't like the way your nose looks like or don't want to talk to you for any other reason. They don't have to give one, either. Questions we're sick and tired of: - are you m or f? --> if the behaviour of a person or "it's" name don't reveal anything, it's likey that this person doesn't wish to reveal such information. - who has got this and that file? --> UTFSF - do you guys know any site where I can ... ? --> !FaqLinks - when does chinese democracy come out? --> !FaqGnR !FaqDC - FAQ about dc !FaqGnR - Guns n' Roses FAQ !FaqRules - The hub's rules and requests !FaqLinks - some links you might find useful !FaqFiles - some hints about files that you might find in the hub !FaqGnR WHAT'S GN'R'S CURRENT LINEUP? W. Axl Rose, lead vocals Buckethead, lead guitar Robin Finck, lead guitar Richard Fortus, lead guitar Tommy Stinson, bass Dizzy Reed, piano/keyboards Chris Pittman, synth&effects Brian "Brain" Mantia, drums WHEN DOES "CHINESE DEMOCRACY" COME OUT? Choose from the following: -When it gets released maybe? -We don't know -When there will be democracy in China -When Axl is satisfied with it -Never Those answers could all be true. "All we need, is just a little patience..." -------------------- !FaqFiles As you might expect, there is more than one record of the song "November Rain" available, so searching for it yields funny results. If you are looking for something in particular (such as an album or a live record), you should try to browse file lists. There are mp3 from nearly every show since 1984. There are mpegs and mp3 from nearly every show in 2002, and some from earlier on. Good 2002 shows are Albany and Leeds for a start (you'll want to get all of them anyway...) Don't feel lost, take your time, and browse through file lists and you'll get an overview of what we have :) Tonya
