the only time i can remember that a third candidate had equal time was in 1991 when clinton and bush sr ran..ross perot ran as an independent and had equal time..and it because he was a billionaire and had enough money to compete with the other 2..
I videotaped his presentations. It was hysterical and historical but then someone permanently borrowed them. I think Perot is the reason alternative candidates are blackballed now. A LOT of people voted for him, most not expecting him to win but as a protest vote against the Dem/GOP stranglehold on politics. Ralph Nader ran for the Green party and got a lot of negative press from Dems about taking votes away from the only party with a chance of keeping the GOP from winning. He wasn't nearly as charismatic as Perot though. I did always wonder but never understood how Texans generally felt about Perot at the time.
