Pretty sure that's just the ultimate universe though.

But wait.. isn't the avengers set in the ultimate universe? Oh shit.

But "OMG Teh Spidey is using teh quips nowzzz!"

Reviews are getting more and more lukewarm. I want to like this, I'm a Spiderman fan and I like Garfield, Stone and most of the cast and crew. But it all seems so... unnecessary...

early reviews were good but now critics are reminding every1 how the first act or so of this movie is borrowed heavily from the original, which was made only a decade ago.

Nevertheless, they still say it's a fun movie, tho I'm sad that the villain in the sequel will be Green Goblin. I wanna see new villains like Electro or Kraven the Hunter!

I'll be seeing it, but in truth I've never been a Spiderman fan or hater, in truth I've never really attempted to read any of the comics and, shock you as it might, haven't seen Spiderman 1, 2 or 3, so it'll be a very different view coming from me when I see it. I think being in the "not knowing anything Spiderman related" camp I might actually really enjoy this movie.

They're clearly going down the Nolan route of a gritty, dark origin story while then using their most iconic villain in a bigger and better sequel. People don't seem to realise the Nolan films were a perfect cocktail of all these elements and worked within the confines of the Batman character. You can't apply the same formula and structure to any film.

Good shout out on Kraven. If they wanted to go in a new, bolder direction, that would be a good one.

yep, but I still hope they make room for other villains, if not in the 2nd one then the 3rd one. Electro and Kraven were always my favorites when I was a kid and like Robo said, doing Kraven would help make this trilogy more unique.

If they choose to borrow anything from the Ultimate universe, they should do Carnage since the Ultimate version didn't require much from the Symbiote Spidey/ Venom storyline. We don't need to see that again. Plus, Carnage's insanity also works for this "dark" thing.

If the sequel depicts Green Goblin basically ripping off the Joker, like Robo said, I will officially label this whole franchise a Dark Knight trilogy rip-off.

UPDATE

the villain in the post-credits might not be Green Goblin after all. Some are claiming its Mysterio, some are claiming its Sundown...most are saying it's Green Goblin, though, and the fact that he acts are Connors' boss makes it more likely to be Green Goblin. It'd be cool if it was someone else though

Just back. Enjoyed it a great deal. Has its share of issues but I heartily recommend it.

I'll put together a review tomorrow.

Quote
The word unnecessary has been bandied around a lot in the wake of the long awaited reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. Given that the hugely popular Sam Raimi series fizzled out with a whimper (though clearly not financially wise) a mere five years ago, the Marc Webb helmed Amazing Spider-Man had an uphill battle on two fronts; to standout from not only the rest of the superhero crowd, particularly in the wake of the mega success of The Avengers and to standout from the original series. The fact that the film is not entirely successful on these fronts and yet somehow works regardless is the most surprising element.

Conventinal wisdom will tell you that a good actor and crew can elevate a poor script and this is certainly the case with ASM. What is, at its heart, a cash grab by Sony, an attempt to get another Spider-Man in theathers as quickly as possible and at any means possible, is elevated by the indie sensibilities and pure filmmaking abilities of Webb and the tremendous cast which bring heart and warmth to their roles.

Garfield presents us with a flawed and believable Parker. A teenager thrust into the adult world, his Parker goes through one of the better arcs in recent superhero films showing a Peter that is well on his road but still has much to learn of his place in the world and his responsibilities. He conveys Peter’s usual awkwardness and geekiness well but also embodies a sense of confidence and even arrogance that simmers underneath, that makes one believe this kid really could be Spider-Man. His Spider-Man does quip a bit more too but perhaps not as much as many fans had hoped, although its sparse use here does suggest it may not be the best approach for live action.

Emma Stone similarly does an excellent job as Gwen with a tender performance. Again, she brings a sense of confidence in her character; this is not a simple damsel in distress. She shines in her scenes with Garfield as does Webb’s direction. It’s here that his past work on (500) Days of Summer really shines through creating a sweet and believable teenage romance thanks in no small part to the two leads. Other characters also do well. Denis Leary is an enjoyable and engaging Captain Stacey, while Sally Fields and Martin Sheen bring gravitas and considerable charm to their roles.

Rhys Ifans as the Lizard however doesn’t fare quite as well, thinly drawn and not nearly as tragic as his comic counterpart. This ties on to bigger problems with the film, namely the plot. Ultimately, the story just doesn’t work and sadly, Curt Connors’ master plan is a little silly. The story itself is, sadly, somewhat generic and little more than a set up for sequels which, although potentially exciting, harm the actual film itself, making it seem much less like the sum of its parts. While it’s perfectly serviceable, it’s a story that hits many familiar beats and remains mostly run of the mill; a poor setup for such interesting, well drawn characters.

There are other flaws. There is some odd pacing throughout the film. Although never boring, there is a lot in this film and there is little time left for characters to breathe before moving to the next setpiece. As such, there is still a “rushed” feeling about the film. The odd pacing, coupled to the weak action scenes means there is, at times, a severe lack of momentum with the film, as it chugs along to its climax without much purpose.

And yet, these inconsistencies somehow make the film more likable. Despite the Marvel Universe films undeniable quality, this film, warts and all, has more soul. As regards its hurdle of standing out in a post Avengers world, it does this by looking inwards and doing things small. It does this by looking more at the Man than the Spider, as you’d hope. After all, isn’t that what Spider-Man is all about, his relatability? Webb and Garfield realised this and so brought humanity to the character and those around him. Everything may not work in the film, but the foundations are rock solid and there is potential there. For both this new Spider-Man and his universe.

BOTTOM LINE: There is Amazing (sorry) potential in this Spider-Man as we are gifted with a more believable and human Spidey universe that works thanks to Webb and his talented cast despite the flimsy plot and obvious Sony cash grab. 4/5.

Nah, the movie is not for me. I can safely say I will never watch it. However, that's a well written piece Mr. Robo.
I hope, I do not wait.
