Ramble On - cover
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:37:09 PM »
Yet, another Led Zep song. At one point, in the 90's, I was doing everything in the Led Zep catalog up through "Houses of the Holy."

I like this one because it makes me feel lazy.

I don't mean to be awkward Ron, but is there any chance you could upload to youtube? This box thing you are doing doesn't ever work for me, and I really want to hear your Zep covers :(

I have not u/l'd to youtube in a while. I'd have to find my account info. And what I have is a sound file (mp3) not wmv or mov or wav file. If I had your email, I could just attach the file and whatever media player your rig has would play it, since it is an mp3.

I'll see what I can do.

You might try right click and open in new window.
Barring that, here it is, on youtube.

Most videos show the performer. In this, I thought I would show a pic of my audience.

Pretty good my man! Thanks for taking the time to do that. Was a really good take on the song. You reminded me a bit of Jack White. Intentional or no?

I know which part you are talking about "my, my, my, my baby ..." I hear the same thing, too.

The high volume parts preceding it, I sang really loud, so I had backed a few feet away from the mic. I was struck kind of funny by that sound, too.

I am impressed with Jack as a total artist. He was in that doc, "It might get Loud," meeting with the Edge and Jimmie Page. He showed how he recorded stuff

My wife thinks I sound like Glenn Hughes. One day, she was coming home from work and heard "No Stranger to Love" on the radio. Interesting history about that song.

It Might Get Loud is brilliant, I really love that film. It is up on youtube in its entirety too, so it can be watched at any time! Ashamedly I do not know what Glen Hughes sounds like, so cannot compare your voice to his :shy:

Here's the strange story behind this song.

A little history from an old man, if you don't mind.

Glenn Hughes started out as a kid, playing guitar, then changed to bass. But he always sang. He started a band called Trapeze and during the early 70's played in south Texas, mostly around Houston, every year.

Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne and briefly considered Hughes. But he had too much soul in his voice with that expressive vibrato. They were so used to Ozzy's straight-tone singing, almost monotonic. While Black Sabbath was having difficulties within the band, Tony Iommi decided to do a solo album and have Glenn Sing on it, including the song, "No Stranger to Love." The record company caught wind of it and Iommi was under exclusive contract so, presto chango, it became a "Black Sabbath" album. So, Hughes was accidently a singer for Black Sabbath for exactly one album.

Later, he would join David Coverdale to sing in Deep Purple on such songs as "Burn" about the time that Ritchie Blackmore was leaving to start Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio and his band, Elf.

The above linked video is that song. Over the years, Hughes has lost weight, recovered from drugs, got with some old friends and started Black Country Communion and has been playing festivals.

A man of immense talent and humility. And if my wife is right and I sound even a little like him, that is a huge compliment and I hope to live up to that.

Also, remember, that when my wife makes this comparison, she can hear me in person without mic effects or my crappy recording and mixing skills. I think my voice is a little cleaner in the high end but it can be hard to tell because I overload the mic.

The differences between me and Glenn Hughes is that he is british and I am american. And together, we would look like Mutt and Jeff. He is about 5' 5 1/2" or so, and I am 6' 6", not that it means anything.

You totally do sound like him, and please do take it as a compliment. Also, I recognise that song. Somehow. I don't know how, but I was able to sing along :hmpf

Thanks for the history lesson though, sincerely. I always appreciate that you take time to write proper posts on here, so thanks. The guy had to have the chops to be able to sing for all those guys, for sure.

And thank you, so very much. I also think I sound like Glenn Hughes but hesitated to say so only because I don't want to have people think I am bragging, which I am not. I just noticed some similarities in tone and timbre.

Glenn is a "natural" singer, never forced, never doing anything his voice did not already do, naturally. And that is how I approach singing. We just happen to have similar timbre of voice and similar range, as well.

Much of this song is in the lower end of tenor range, which is reachable for many people, especially lyric or light baritones with the higher notes being difficult for them. My top note is a C6. On a guitar in standard tuning, that is 1st string, 19th fret. My lowest note with volume and not needing a mic is E3, which is 4th string, 2nd fret. With some concentration, I can get some usable volume down to C3, which is 5th string, 3rd fret. I have sung as low as A2 but it is very low volume and I have to be right up on the mic to be heard.

I cannot sing a note at G2, 6th string, 3rd fret. That's just a growl for me, a sound effect, rather than a sung note. Anything below that is just blowing air, for me.

Thanks, Nature Boy. I am planning on covering that song "No Stranger to Love." For once in my life, I thought, why not cover a song with a singer that I sound similar to in a music style that I am totally comfortable with. Odd idea, eh?
