Slash: GN’R Book Is Closed
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:19:00 AM »
Axeman confirms he considered avoiding Rock Hall induction, but he’s glad he went in the end… because it marks end of the road for 18-year-aftermath.

Slash has confirmed he considered not attending Guns N’ Roses’ induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame – but he’s glad he did go, because it marks the end of the road for his active feelings about the band he left in 1996.

Singer Axl Rose finally confounded decades-long anticipation over a reunion by refusing to appear at the ceremony, leaving his bandmates to play a set with Slash’s solo band singer Myles Kennedy.

And as other members of the revered outfit say they think it’s all over now, the guitarist admits he feels the same way.

Slash tells Rolling Stone: “In my heart of hearts I wanted to have the whole original band get together and perform – which I sort of knew was wishful thinking. It became apparent it wasn’t going to happen and I was like, ‘Oh, fuck.’ I was disillusioned with the whole thing, but there was that commitment that I was going and I thought Axl was still going to go.

“Early on, I have to admit, I was like, ‘I don’t really want to go if we’re not going to play,’ though I never said, ‘I’m not going to go.’ It was sort of a black cloud for a few months there.”

On hearing Rose wasn’t going to appear, the rest of the band made the last-minute decision to play – but it wasn’t Slash’s idea to bring in Kennedy. “Two days before the ceremony Axl said he wasn’t coming,” the guitarist recalls. “Duff McKagan and I talked and we said, ‘Okay, we’re just going to fucking get together and play.’ Duff goes, ‘We should get Myles.’

“It hadn’t occurred to me, really. I talked to Myles – he was apprehensive about getting put in that position, so at first he turned it down. But finally he said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it.’

“I hadn’t played with Gilby Clarke in a long time and I hadn’t played Guns songs with Steven Adler in fucking 18 years. It was a little bit foreign at first. After a couple of minutes it started to fall into place. I had a really fucking good time.”

Despite fans’ almost constant clamour for a regathering since the band disintegrated in the nineties, Slash says he’d never taken the concept seriously.

“I didn’t have any illusions or delusions of GN’R getting back together for anything,” he says. “I maybe tried to see it happen for this one particular event. I didn’t have high hopes.

“But now it’s all said and done, it really felt like closing the book on the whole thing.”

He also rejects the concept of Kennedy fronting a new version of the band, saying “it’s way too complicated an idea at this point,” and he also denies there was any “fuck you” attitude in their Rock Hall performance. “It had nothing to do with that,” he insists. “We’re proud of this moment, and I’m talking about legions one Guns fan who were really excited about the prospects of something happening so we can accept this acknowledgement. That was the glue that held us together.”

Stop talking about it then. And that goes for Matt and Steven also.
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

Yeah, maybe now that Slash agrees with Axl that a reunion will NEVER happen, they all need to stop talking about it. And yeah, most of us have realized this a long time ago. Axl is happy with his new GNR and Slash and Duff and the others have their own stuff, so let it be.

I agree...I just watched The Use Your Illusion II DVD from tokyo the other day out of sheer boredom and I thought to myself,"this band really knew how to fucking blow the doors and roof off the tokyo dome"...insane performance and you know something despite Axl being Axl back then when he was on his game he really knew how to entertain the crowd...He may be loved or hated by millions of fans but Guns N Roses in my own opinion wouldn't even be the same without Axl,he was like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode and his voice showed it.Personally,I'd rather see Guns N Roses with Axl then Guns N Roses without him...nothing against Slash,Duff,Steven,Izzy,Matt,Gilby,Dizzy....Axl had the voice that made the band what they are after all these years....I don't believe Guns N Roses would get the same response from fans if the original lineup had some other guy singing instead of Axl...He's got the raw "fuck you" attitude,he's got the voice that will never be imitated/replaced and of course he has the power to wear just about anything on stage and pull it off every single time.Axl Rose, love him or hate him...Enjoy the music he has given us over the years because Uncle Axl won't be around for very long and when he goes up to rock heaven, people will begin to miss his presence and what he gave us all these years,so stop complaining and enjoy the music that he has given us since 1985...He may be one crazy motherfucker but the world just wouldn't ever be the same with the man formerly known as Bill Bailey....now goes by W.Axl Rose!!!  :D

An interview with Axl Rose about Slash in December 2011:

Axl Rose:  "The fight with me and Slash started the day I met him. He came in, popped my tape out and put his in and wanted me in his band. And I didn't want to join his band. We've had that war since Day 1."

Now there you go fans.  You are trying to get Axl together with a person he does not like at all.  Now how in the world do you think this will work out?

That's not really closing the book, is it? Journalists will surely remember those 3 uncarefull words.
If an album comes out, then buy it. If there's a concert you can go to, then go to it. You're not owed another record. You're not owed any inside stories. You're not owed the band to be managed by people you approve. It's just electronically recorded vibrations that you happen to like.

i'd like to see a world tour with the AFD/Illusion line-up minus Axl:
Slash, Duff, Matt/Adler, Gilby/Izzy(?), Myles.....i'd buy tichets immediately!

Or like Axl badmouthed Slash. Catchword: "Cancer".

Yeah, me too, but it should be the original line up minus Axl. I mean: Gilby Clarke was just a hired hand for playing the Illusion tour after Izzy left and Sorum just took over the songs which mostly already existed and were written with Steven on the drums. But they already tried something like that with Velvet Revolver but unfortunately Izzy refused to join the band and Adler probably wasn't in the condition at that time.

Are you kidding me? AFter seeing Myles trying to sing sweet child of mine and paradise city, that lineup would suck big time.

NO ONE can sing or fill Axl's shoes ever!

I thought Steven's drumming was fine. Matt is a poser. His line about getting kicked out of GNR for doing alot of drugs didn't get one laugh not even from the band. Just lame.
