Anyone know where I can download some straightfoward recording software (something akin to garage band) free? Torrent sights etc.

All help very much appreciated!

Audacity. It's free. It's what I use. And if you want to export to a usable format like mp2, you will need to download a free patch called LAME mp3 encoder.
