« on: January 17, 2012, 03:42:07 PM »
On one side we have gnr zeppelin, acdc, aerosmith, van halen, pink floyd, hendrix, all "hair" bands

On the other sid we have metallica, sabbath, iron maiden, judas priest, motor head, megadeath, anthrax

Omce and for all lets decide which genre of rock n roll is greater

Meh genres dont do much for me.

For example i love Guns N' Roses but i have never been able to get into Zeppelin, and i enjoy metallica and megadeth but cant stand slayer and anthrax.

Ohh and if i had to choice, progressive rock FTW

Don't agree completely with your classification of rock and metalz (Lemmy does have songs that are definitely Rock for example) but I agree that rock rocks much more than metalz.

Metal and Rock are both terms that means very little other than "uses distortion and has long hair" to be honest. It's only when you elaborate further on that description that you can genuinely label it so saying Heavy Metal could mean anything from The Man-Eating Tree to Cannibal Corpse...those bands have literally nothing in common and both can be called "heavy metal".

and since Rock hasn't been quite so much about influential sub genres as much as influential bands with nothing in common it's even trickier.
Apparently a new Amy Winehouse 'Greatest Hits' collection is coming out, but the tinfoil and spoons aren't included.

Hard rock.

i like hot or brutal guitar playing or drumming etc etc but "metal" generally sucks cock IMO.

Sabbath, Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Bowie, Stones.

Hard rock wins.

Well sabbath are considered the creators of heavy metal, so they have to be aprt of that genre.

And as far as classification goes hard rock is closer to the blues while metal is more of its own thing.

They might not consider themselves as heavy metal, bit every metal band to come along said they influenced them. And ive seen multiple documentaries where they said the first sabbath album was the first heavy metal album.

Actually Sabbath are considered the first metal band, the term heavy metal was started when it was given to them by a journalist who saw them live and said "the music hits you like a wall of heavy metal".

Fucking what!? Hair bands!? Because they had hair? :hmpf

You could argue G&R were hair, glam, gay, whatever... But the rest? Holy fuck.

you could argue that Aerosmith and in particular Van Halen had eras that could be interpreted as hair metal but i do agree in most people definitions none of these bands even GnR would be hair metal. And frankly "hair metal" is such a shitty term it refers to none of the musical elements of the songs but diverts attention to the image instead.

I see the confusion. I wasnt calling gnr, or zepplin, or aerosmith "hair bands" I was talking about poison and bon jovi bamds like that. I was just imcluding them under the umbrella of hard rock. To me hair metal is a lot closer to hard rock sounding than actual metal. I hope this clarifys things. Btw this is kinda a dumb thread.

nah you're idea isn't that bad it's just that "heavy metal" doesn't really mean anything and frankly nor does "hard rock" if it was a list of bands who are musically similar vs other bands who are musically similar it'd be a lot easier to vote on.

but frankly Hendrix, pink floyd, van halen, ac/dc and GnR are all very different musically just because they're all "hard rock" doesn't mean they can be lumped together other than that umbrella term AC/DC and Pink Floyd (for example) have very little in common.

IMO Sabbath didnt make a "metal" album until Heaven and Hell (1980) with Dio... the NWOBHM (new wave of british heavy metal) is what I think of as true heavy metal, all the growling/trashcan beating shit that bands peddle these days is something else.

fair enough, that's your opinion and i won't contest it mostly because there are a lot of rock elements in Sabbath it's easy to see how the line is blurred.

Modern metal is too big a range to judge, like i said "metal" is not really a genre of music as much as an umbrella term for several entirely different genres. Black metal bands like Emperor sound nothing like atmospheric metal bands like the man-eating tree and neither of those sound anything like power metal outfits like Kamelot and none of THOSE bands sound like folk metal or thrash metal or NWOBHM etc etc.

Face it, it's all just rock n roll. metal, rock, punk, grunge...Whatever.

Led Zep were also classed as being 'metal' at the time. It doesn't make the description right.

every band mentioned in this thread will likely have an eclectic mix of influences and very few of them can be classed as highly original artists. Most of them will draw influences from early blues, early rock n' roll, Psychedelia, and country and western.

Sabbath never invented metal, they are just part of the evolution of guitar based popular music: Adding their own elements to many influnces that had gone before them.

It's a very grey area, but I'd cite Judas Priest before Sabbath.

There was a Classic Rock article a good few years back and there's shit loads of bands who were influencing the 'metal' sound in the late 60's, whom, for one reason or another, never became well known outside of their peers.

so if Britney Spears states she plays technical progressive death metal does that mean she does?

Motorhead are one of those bands who you can describe as metal or rock and you're not necessarily wrong to be honest.
