They were never in that genre. Their early musical style is more akin to punk the middle period of the 80's when they wrote the music that inspired GnR isn't glam either it has no features of glam rock. And obviously from the 90's to now they've certainly not been glam.

People gave them that label because they had spikey hair and platform boots...that is not enough to classify a band, the music is. It's akin to saying Marilyn Manson is gothic metal.
