He's old. And the way axl sings DOES do damage to your voice. Fact.

Maybe he's under a little pressure or something when he's performing to a live broadcast where millions of people will be watching him. I've noticed it in RIR 4, and the MTV awards in 2002.

I think there may be something to that.  People I know that sing live say that singing when nervous in front of crowds definitely makes it harder to sing the way you want to.  However, all the 2002 shows sounded like that.  So, either he discovered Xanax since 2002 or this theory is crap.

This is one of the best ive heard Axl singing live.I posted this to loads people who think its fucken great ,it only 2009 he has that growl and anger in his voice which seemed to desert him in Rio ,but in fairness the broadcast sound was bad for all acts and it was the first gig after a long break so be patient for those who thinks he wasn't up to par.

In rio axl hardly left the stage.  (when he leaves the stage he has a mix of oxygen an some throat mix)   some times he will leave the stage several times in one song.   Its well documented.

But we will see it as a costume change.

The Rock in Rio voice and sound problems turned to be because of the rain and malfunction equipament. If you search in YouTube for Chile 5th October concert (ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVov3-akpkI or http://www.youtube.com/user/c32#p/u/12/xEyCfbVdpCk ) , you will ear and see huge diferences. This examples were filmed with a simple handy cam, not with Pro systems like in RiR, but in Chile Guns n' Roses sounds fucking good.

i think he naturally has oh no HAD is the right word how he sang in the early gigs 84-85-86 (hollywood rose demos) since he wasnt trained how to sing i dont think he needed much effort to sing like that. but after as they were touring, drinking a lot of alcohol, doin drugs it really worn down his throat. and he started sound different a bit in 87 and in 88 completly different than in the early 84-86 voice. he many times said in shows that he blew his throat and even tehy canceled gigs cuz of that.and by the time the appetite tour ended for a while 88 sept-oct-nov they had a break. and in the japan/australian tour axl got back voicewise from the slump a bit.
then basically 1.5 yrs they weredoin not much but damaging themselves axl's voice drastically changed (rio soundcheck) and he could hardly sound like that clean and couldnt sing clearly the high notes usually like he could easily in AFD. but that voice also sounded pretty cool so no real problems were. voicewise there were highs and lows like 91 june his voice was good... but later on in the EU leg it became very raspy, unclear luckily his power of the voice helped out them to be still very goddamn cool. again a break and in worchester i think he had very good voice again comparing to shows like 91 mannheim or sweden. and in 92 he started sing differently a bit mb he got a teacher and 93 totally diffferent style of singing which i liked  very much but i think it clearly can be seen its different technique not that raspy rather quite high all the time . i dont really know what he  had been doin from 94 to 2001 probably that much drink n booze that totally took away his voice abilities. and cigarettes take away lng capacity as well....so we got to the mickey mouse voice the very down of his voice ever...he was a bit better in 2006 thank to teacher and in 2009-2010 we started to hope that we soon getting back the old or at least an old-like axl. and now we got back to the very down again. no power, no raspyness, fucked up head voice, and he doesnt even dare to try usually sing the high notes as he should. so all in all axl is just a mere shadow of his former self again... and if the ex gunners heard rio show they were shaking their heads what gnr has become...
so i think its the life style not the sing style that worn his throat since if so he should have been in great shape in 2001-2002 (cuz in 8 yrs no gigs were at all)

this was his voice from rio 2006

it's sucks, but the whole 2006/07 era Axl had a great voice!! rock am ring, donington us warmup dates etc..
so the "rock in rio" sound i dont count!!

Shouldn't this belong in the "on tour" section?

i'll leave it here, if someone else wants to move it they can.  it's just general discussion, so i figure it'll be more read / discussed here.

That whole night in Osaka '09 was one of the best voices he produced the last 10 years .
If an album comes out, then buy it. If there's a concert you can go to, then go to it. You're not owed another record. You're not owed any inside stories. You're not owed the band to be managed by people you approve. It's just electronically recorded vibrations that you happen to like.
