Quote
The reactors at the North Anna power plant, just seven miles from the epicentre in the town of Mineral, Virginia, shut down automatically when the earthquake took place. A dozen nuclear power plants were inspected after the quake but no damage found.

There were no known injuries but a number of historic buildings in Washington were damaged in what was the biggest quake to hit the east coast for decades. Stone finials fell from spires on the National Cathedral. A number of government departments and all Smithsonian museum buildings were closed for inspections.

The National Park Service closed the 555-foot-high Washington Monument, the largest obelisk in the world, for an "indefinite period" after cracks were discovered at the top.

Capitol Hill aides staffers and other workers were forced out of their offices and onto the streets when the earthquake, a very rare event on the east coast, took place. It even prompted the US Senate to conduct a rare session away from the Capitol.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from buildings and mobile phone services jammed. The earthquake led to disruptions in air traffic, stooped trains and created traffic jams, leading to jibes from Americans on the West Coast who are more inured to seismic tremors.

Perhaps the most trauma occurred in Mineral itself. The quake stopped everything for hours. Schools closed. Coffee shops shut down. At the Food Lion, on the outskirts, managers shooed reporters away but not before one employee said: "The whole floor was going up and down. It was crazy in there."

The disruption was caused in Mineral, where everything was closed for hours, Ben Pirolli, a co-owner of Main Street Plumbing and Electrical, told the "Washington Post": "I was mopping the floor and the next thing you know, everything is falling in on me. I thought the world was coming to an end."

Too bad Obama wasn't somewhere on the East Coast. Maybe A falling brick would have hit him and knocked some sense into him....or killed him.

Oh wait he's on vacation...

Again.

It's okay, he's on martha's vineyard...and were getting the hurricane, or at least a toned down version of it in the northeast. There's always the hope of flooding....

5.9 sounds like a fairly strong old shake. Hope there aren't victims.

It REALLY seems like the media here is making this much more of a big deal than it was.

I actually felt the earthquake (my first for those who are keeping score :shy:) all the way here in nYc. It kind of leaves you amazed to feel the earth move under your feet and it not being caused by man.
