Yep. It's my favourite book. I don't care if it's for kids, I love its charm and simplicity and it holds a place in my heart no other book can match.

It is indeed charming. I might read it over the next couple of days and post my favourite passages.
I hope, I do not wait.

I agree with Pawnshop: I as a Tolkien nerd want to get as much Tolkien material turned into live on the big screen. I read the Hobbit after LOTR and although I liked it, it was not grand enough for me after reading LOTR. I know it's not supposed to be grand, being Tolkien's first book and introduction to Middle Earth which he by then had no idea about what it would turn out to be.

Is it certain that he doesn't have any rights to use stuff from the Silmarillion? German power/prog metal band Blind Guardian got to do a full concept album on the Silmarillion (Nightfall in Middle-Earth), complete with spoken word parts featuring Morgoth, Sauron, and many others.

Here the cover art, with Lúthien dancing before Morgoth.

My fellow nerds have abandoned me :tear:

I guess he can use any stuff at the start of the appendices of LOTR but as for The Silmarillion itself, that's a no. Tolkien sold the rights in 1968 to pay off a bill but don't forget, The Silmarillion was published posthumously by his son. Christopher Tolkien has shown nothing but scorn for these films and he seems to have no interest in selling the rights of The Silmarillion.

I have no idea how they've gotten away with that, I'll inform Chris Tolkien so he can sue  I've looked them up... seems they were inspired by Robert Jordan and George RR Martin as well. Intriguing. Any good?

I like them very much. They started out as a Thrashy power metal band in the late eighties and always had lyrics based on fantasy literature. Throughout their career they slowed down a lot, the music got more progressive, bombastic, melodic and Hansi Kursch actually learned to sing (but still has an epic German accent  :D).

Here some songs:

( recount how Turgon, in view of inevitable defeat, builds the city of Gondolin, aided by Ulmo ("The Lord of Water"))

Just read the book again, ffs.

If Jackson wants to rewrite it then that's his prerogative. I will not be buying into the concept though.
I hope, I do not wait.

Not that PJ's Tolkien films are BAD, but they visually dont sit right for me.

When I think of dwarves and elves and Orcs and dragons I think Dan Elmore/Games Workshop...

Despite the jizz-fest over the LOTR movies, it's an oft overlooked fact that the movies were not 100% true to Tolkien's plot.

I liked them, but I'm with Robo on this one. KEEP IT SIMPLE!

If Jacko wants to do the whole Tolkein thing, then he could always do a Silmarillion movie.that's a piece of shit novel anyway, imo.

I'm pretty sure that when Tolkein built his Middle Earth history, it was exactly that: He was building a fictional history on which works of greatness could be built upon. He was not concerned with prose or great storytelling.

The Hobbit is one of - if not THE greatest- pieces of storytelling known to man. Tell the story or fuck off Jacko.

Quote
Hollywood Reporter and various other outlets are reporting that July 18, 2014 will be the release date for the third Hobbit film.

In addition, they report that Warner Bros has announced that the third film will be renamed The Hobbit: There And Back Again.

The second film, to be released on December 13, 2013 will be called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of International Distribution said in the press release: “The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be an action spectacle and an emotional conclusion for this already much-anticipated trilogy. Opening in the summer will maximize playability for what promises to be an event film for fans the world over.”

I don't really have as big of a problem with the titles of those movies. My real beef is that the content of them sucks on every level and how they ruin the novelty of the original trilogy.

come to think of it, this Hobbit trilogy might do just that. Suck so bad that it ruins the novelty of the Lord Of the Rings trilogy.

New stills released - http://www.dailyblam.com/news/2012/09/08/first-look-lee-pace-as-elf-king-thranduil-in-the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-10-new

The updated scroll (the 9th picture I think) shows the timeline of the film and where Part One will end. It ends after the Eagles' rescue the group from the Wargs and Goblins which means no Beorn in the first film

Its a very "fanfiction-ish" title. Will probably reflect the content of the film :troll:
