Nope, happened during the narrative of The Hobbit, though it's not shown in the main plot. It's why Gandalf kept wandering off for his own business throughout the story.

Going to have to disagree with much of this; Jackson took plenty of liberties and they contradicted the spirit of the books. Turning Aragorn into typical flawed Hollywood leading man instead of the proud lord from the book, Frodo turning against Sam, the Elves being defeatist assholes... I could go on.

I adore the films, I truly do (especially Fellowship). But as adaptations, they often leave me ripping my hair out.

Obviously you know the books much better than me. Besides I read them ages ago shortly before the first movie was released and don't remeber many details. But when I read a book I form a mental picture of characters and events and usually the movie adaptation don't cover them. Jackson adaptation covered that picture at 90 % for me which I never experienced with another book being made into movie. In respect to Aragorn I don't agree. One of the things I liked about the movies was that they weren't made the Hollywood sleezy way. And I don't think Aragorn was depicted like your typical Hollywood sleezy hero.

Now you mention it, I do remember that now. Wouldn't have done without your expert help though, my brother from a different mother :shy:

I have a question about this. My copy of the book is a translation (yes, it´s a shame) and there´s only a very short mention, that Gandalf was in the council of the wizards and they banished the Witch. Nothing more. Was it told more precisely in the original?

Witch? Is that the Witch-King or am I getting confused? :ninja:

Nah, it's just a reference in the original appendices too. Basically, the three wizards and some of the elves were involved in driving the dark sorceror, the Necromancer out of his fortress in Dol Guldur. The Necromancer turns out to be Sauron.

It's only referenced in The Hobbit as business Gandalf had in the South, elaborated on briefly in LOTR and found in the appendix.

Okay, thanks. "Banishing the witch" refers to events in Dol Guldur (and therefore Sauron). It is confusing, but nothing important does not seem to be missing.

I was also thinking of the With-king of Angmar. I'm at the moment reading the appendices of LOTR after reading the English version of LOTR for the first time.

Haven't read the book  :shy: but is Tom Bombedil in it at all? I've always been curious about him even though he never intervenes, because he is like the most powerful being in Middle Earth supposedly and he was around before anybody came to be. I thought the LOTR movies would include that scene where Frodo gives the ring to Tom and it does nothing to him but it didn't  :(

Tom was in the Fellowship of the ring. Tom himself said he was there before the forest. Also Elrond told the elves called Tom "oldest and fatherless". The ring did not have power in Tom, he did not disappear when he put it on and saw Frodo even when Frodo was wearing it.

But I have a question about this too. In the Fellowship of the Ring they said, that Tom is the oldest. In the Two Towers Gandalf and Legolas were discussing about the ents and said that Treebeard is the oldest living being on earth. Which one is the oldest? Anybody knows?

Indeed, Bombadil apears and is mentioned shortly in the extended version.

I don't think it's been said who was earlier than who. I believe it's been implied that Bombadil was there earlier (I thought it was briefly said in a note that he was there when the first people/beings arrived on Middle-earth).

Yeah, Tom is one of the first characters created by Tolkien, there's even a poem about him and a small book called "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil"

But the first creatures on middle-earth had to be the Valar and then the firstborn: the elves. (See The Silmarillion)

Maybe, but it seems that Tom Bombadil was allready there when the creation of Middle Earth wasn't even finished. He says "“Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the Little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside.”
