But Jackson's attitude to things some times is rather infuriating for me. I too have poured over the commentaries and Jackson does insinuate several times that he knew better than Tolkien in several instances. I get the Bombadil thing but I find it harder to swallow his complete bastardisation of the character of Aragorn.
He also ruined Faramir in the films.

I think the best line in the movies, although I don't think it was intentional, was when Faramir took Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath and Sam says in despair "we shouldn't even be here". No shit! It was only Jackson's complete destruction of one of the greatest characters in the book, Faramir, that had you there instead of moving on towards Minas Morgul.

Lord Of The Rings is the best film ever for me  The book is terrific, too and I can't say which of the two I like better. The Aussie guy who made the film is obviously a great fan of Tolkien and recreated the book as closely as it can be done.  And the cast and the scenery were great, too. I waited every year for three years for the film to come out. The only regret I have is that it wasn't on 3D.
I don't have great expectations for the Hobbit but I'll definitely watch it at the cinema

I just hope Smaug doesn't look stupid
Apparently a new Amy Winehouse 'Greatest Hits' collection is coming out, but the tinfoil and spoons aren't included.

The Hobbit was the first book I can conciously recall reading. I was 6-six-year's-old. It was ace then, and it was ace the other six times I read it.

I shall not be watching this adaptation; This adaptation of what is effectively 'Lord Of The Rings Part I.' Not that yor typical movie-fan would know that.
I hope, I do not wait.

I'm more concerned about the voice, needs the right level of steel and authority. I wonder if the rumours of Benedict Cumberbatch voicing him are true.

Smaug talking in the books is easy to see mentally and makes sense without being retarded...on tv talking dragons rarely ever have the same effect as in writing.

Unless it's Sean Connery.  :paranoid:

They should get John Rhys Davies - he did Treebeard's voice as well as Gimli. As long as he can do a voice similar but distinct enough from Treebeard's, then I reckon he'd be a winner
I think it is high time for a bit of class around here, don't you?

Luke Evans is Bard.

And more importantly, Benedict Cumberbatch is indeed voicing Smaug

I'm dreading this movie more than any other adaption in history. My all time number one "novel," though I find the term "tale" to be more fitting.
