My one problem with the community of people who listen to this type of music and will have listened to a lot of the stuff that came out of Scandinavia during the 90's, like early Dimmu and Satyricon, Behmoth and so forth complaining when the bands try to move on and evolve their sound.

I remember talking to a guy who claimed to be "a huge Dimmu fan" but hadn't liked anything they'd released since Stormblast. He claimed that the band sold out and weren't Black metal anymore. To me this is just bands evolving and maturing. I feel it's natural for bands to grow and to expect them to continue pumping out the same sound is just moronic.

You get that with most metal fans. Look at fans of thrash. God forbid (or should I say Satan forbid) they try new things or try to have a more "mature" sound or incorporate new sounds into their music.

Speaking of black metal bands that have evolved. Check out Ulver. Full on black metal at first. They've done jazz albums, ambient music, all sorts of different things. And none of it has sucked.

+1 it's only natural for bands to evolve their sound over time but you will always have those fans who want the debut album over and over.

If that debut album is AFD, that would be impossible to duplicate because that is the best album EVA

Checking out Ulver now, I'm liking it!   Very atmospheric

Well that's what will always separate people who are idiots and people who genuinly like music and understand it

Indeed. Just taking Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir as examples...Satyrico n's K.I.N.G. and Dimmu Borgir's The Serpentine Offering are much both different than what the band would have even thought of trying in their early days but both songs are among their very best IMO.

K.I.N.G. is an amazing song. Personally Fuel For Hatred would be favourite and again it's a million miles from what they started with. With Dimmu, In Sorte Diaboli was my favourite ablbum of theres. I mean Hellhammer drummed! It. Was. Insane!

Also just wondering if anyone has ever listened to this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Underworld_Regime

Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir), King Ov Hell (Gorgoroth) and Frost (Satyricon) all on one album

I'm kind of torn between K.I.N.G. and Fuel For Hatred. Both have amazing groove and power behind the groove.

I've only heard of The Underworld Regime in passing but anything with Frost is bound to be great.

By The Way...Hellhammer is the drummer for The Kovenant and one of the members of Dimmu Borgir is also a member, can't remember who though  :argh

Yeah I've listened to Kovenant before, great band. And it was their singer and bassist who started Chrome Division with Shagrath if that's what you mean?

Could be, the only member I am fully familiar with and sure of is Hellhammer to be honest.
