Extreme/ Black/ Death Metal Thread
« on: May 10, 2011, 12:44:52 AM »
The more heavier side of metal is something that I'm sure won't have universal interest here so not much of a point in me making individual thread for different bands and releases, so I'll just leave this thread as a place anyone who likes the genres can share and discuss bands.

Decided to start it as I've been listening to Greek death metal band Septicflesh's new album "The Great Mass". For anyone who doesn't know them they're kinda like a heavier Dimmu Borgir. They use ocastral elements in their music (a full orcastra and choir in this latest release) and are getting some more international attention as they're supporting Children of Bodom at the moment for some shows.

Check them out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oMm5-hLdiU&feature=related

I've been a fan (off and on) of black/death metal for a long time. Loved Bathory when I was younger. Venom. Stopped listening to it for years then read Lords of Chaos and I discovered it all over again. Darkthrone has become one of my all time fav bands.

Lords of Chaos

That book is the best metal/rock oriented book I've read so far.

They've got my vote for best extreme metal band ever. Great music and as they matured, outstanding lyrics.

Well I'm glad there's more people on the forum who aren't put off from bands like this as a lot of rock fans would be. I don't like the assumption that this music is "just noise" considering that in many cases (especially with more modern mainstram rock and metal) these bands are infinitly more sophisticated.

MayheM
Burzum
Satyricon
DEATH
Dimmu Borgir
Arch Enemy
Carcass
Serpenthia

Mayhem, Dimmu and Satyricon are right up there with me too. Especially Dimmu's latest release. I was expecting a car crash but Abrahadabra was amazing!

Akercocke

The fact that you know Akercocke speaks volumes, I'm a big big fan

May I ask why? I know it's not "conventional" black metal...it's like black metal with death metal vocals and occasionally 80s thrash riffs.

Pandemonium and Winterburst are two of my favorite "finds"

I liked em on first listen but then they sounded gimmicky. Although, black metal is full of gimmicks so fuck, I don't know.

Honestly, they lacked atmosphere.
