Great player yes.
His music not so much.
If you don't like his music, fine. But there's quality in it. A lot actually. :slywink:

Ron's music absolutely has to the same Zappa-esque sophistication, that's why a lot of other people make that association. However, his music was never meant to resemble Zappa, nor did he ever express that ambition. It's what others make of it. So try as you might to falsely imply some sort of ambition on his part.

Anyway, Zappa = Zappa and everything else = everything else. Since when is Frank Zappa the status quo? And why should any deviation from that in terms of harmonics, dynamics, rhythms, melodies, non diatonics and theory manipulation indicate anything lesser in quality? Ron is at least ten times the guitar player Zappa was. Zappa needed Vai for the (technically) unrestricted expression of his visions for guitar. Vai, according to Satriani, has deep respect for the new G3. That's how Thal, Eklundh and Govan are seen in the virtuoso scene.

If anything, Ron is the only GNR member who represents a musical force that, on its own, can hold a candle to Zappa. No other member in the past or present versions of this band brings to the table, in terms of pure musicality (composition-wise, producing, engineering, singing, playing) what Ron has to offer. Calling his vast body of solo material "second rate shit" is provocative nonsense of the highest order. Like it or not, but it's quality music nonetheless...

So just because someone likes GNR he should love Slash's playing? I certainly don't, and I became a GNR fan watching their RIR III concert - ya know, got used to Bucket and Ron playing lead and Slash doesn't impress me at all - from a technical and compositional standpoint. That doesn't mean I don't like his playing and solos at all. I just happen to prefer Ron and Bucket. ;)

I don't even listen to old GNR anymore, even the older stuff I only listen when the new guys are playing. So yeah, even though your affirmation was pointless, I could live without old GNR any day of the week.

Don't even try to bring the "past" subject, because we can see who was the creative force behind GNR when Axl released Chinese Democracy and Velvet Revolver released 2 not so good albums.

Slash was good or even great in GNR? I think so. I just happen to like more Ron's and Bucket's (And Robin's for that matter) quality contributions over the several songs Slash played on. Ya know, quality over quantity. :unibrow:

I think it's also a matter of generations. The younger kids don't appreciate the old stuff as much as the older fans.

Funny that Cd doesn’t exist for the radios. However they still do play “the old stuff” with the same frequency that they play Katy Perry or Gaga’s songs. To me, the fact that old rock songs are still played as if they were hits is a triumph over bullshit.
Don't even try to bring the "past" subject, because we can see who was the creative force behind GNR when Axl released Chinese Democracy and Velvet Revolver released 2 not so good albums.

Who? Izzy? I dunno... it was a matter of chemistry and work team magic. The fact that Velvet Revolver didn’t have as many hits as the old GNR doesn’t mean that Axl was the genius brain behind it.

And even though I enjoy CD, I think it’s a great album and I appreciate the new crew (I love Ron and Fortus, specially Fortus lately) it doesn’t live up to the “Old GNR” work. It just doesn’t...
