IMO it means that you traded your soul for riches & fortune but you couldn't handle it & it destroyed you & now you have nothing. You failed. Devil hate losers & don't give them a second chance. 
But IMO God gives one. You just have to believe in the new beginning & go to the light.. They are both real as you & me.

I don't see anything that religous in my answer. I'm talking about good & evil, past & future not the Bible or the Koran.  & after all you have to beleive in sth. Faith is important.

Like with most good lyrics, there's more than one meaning to it...
First, there's what Axl thought when he wrote it.
Then there's what you understand when you listen to it. Then you read the lyrics in the booklet and you start to think "it might mean...". In the end, it's what you make of it. What do YOU think they mean?

Certainly it sounds like someone who has lost a fight and has reached "rock bottom".

Alx already stated he likes to keep his lyrics "general", so listeners can interpret them for themselves, if you know what I mean.
