Essien to miss South Africa

(PA) Thursday 27 May 2010

Chelsea and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup™ due to injury.

The 27-year-old missed a large part of the recently-concluded season due to knee and ankle injuries and has hardly played any competitive football since December.

National coach Milovan Rajevac had hoped the former Lyon man would be passed fit for the showpiece tournament in South Africa this summer, but the Ghana Football Association today announced he was not expected to be back in action until the end of July.

"Essien will not make full recovery until the end of July."
A statement on Ghana's Official Website.

A statement on Ghana's official website read: "An evaluation by a combined team of medical experts from the Ghana Football Association and Chelsea Football Club revealed that Essien will not make full recovery until the end of July. The Ghana Football Association wishes him full recovery and a quick return to football action."

Essien has been recovering from a knee injury picked up on CAF African Cup of Nations duty in Angola in January. He had been continuing his rehabilitation at Chelsea's training ground and had expressed confidence at being declared fit to be named in Ghana's squad for South Africa.

Essien had sounded optimistic about his chances of playing for his country next month when he told Chelsea's website last week: "I feel a lot better than I did a few weeks ago so I am keeping my fingers crossed that all will be well."

His absence is a huge blow for Ghana even if Rajevic's men did succeed in making it to the Africa Cup of Nations' final without him where they were beaten by defending champions Egypt.

Now you know how England felt in the 86 hand of God game.

You, and the English in general, seem to forget the other goal scored in that game, which in terms of football, should be talked about a lot more than the so called "hand of God" incident.

I feel sorry for Michael, it's never nice when this happens to players as I'm sure they all dream of playing in the World Cup. However, the Ghana FA have themselves mostly to blame, he should have never been made to play in ACON as he hadn't recovered from his previous injury, and consequently he goes on to get a far more serious injury in one of the first games and misses most of that tournament, the rest of the domestic season, and now the World Cup.
An empty shell seems so easy to crack.
Got all these questions.
Don't know who I could even ask.
So I'll just lie alone and wait for the dream.

Surely you've seen Maradonna single handedly skin the entire English defence and score? :O but still, hand of god...what a wanker

And Blue, will be nice to be supporting the same team as you for once

Brazil keeper horrified by "supermarket" ball

Pedro Fonseca
JOHANNESBURG
Fri May 28, 2010 11:26am EDT

(Reuters) - Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar is horrified by the ball which will be used at the World Cup, likening it to a cheap one bought from the supermarket.

"It's terrible, horrible," said the Inter Milan player, widely considered to be the world's top goalkeeper.

"It's like one of those balls you buy in the supermarket."

Brazil's goalkeeping coach Wendell said the new ball was highly unpredictable when hit from long range.

"The danger for goalkeepers is when they come off their line," he said. "They need to stay in a safe place otherwise the ball will drop behind them (and into the goal)."

The World Cup ball, named 'Jabulani' which means 'to celebrate' in the Zulu language, was billed as the first perfectly round ball and the most accurate yet when it was unveiled by FIFA.

Among those quoted at the presentation ceremony in December was Julio Cesar's Brazil team mate Kaka who said in a statement: "For me, contact with the ball is all important, and that's just great with this ball."

Yes, that is the other goal. Didn't we lose 2-1? Well hand of God was one of the Argentinian two, and the other is the one where Diego skipped through our entire defence :argh

Haha, indeed. Don't get used to it though, I'll go back to hating your club teams once the WC's over

Every year people complain about the ball. They need to stop claiming these ridiculous things and just feckin play

It does tend to be mainly 'keepers you'll notice though. From personal experience, as an outfield player these balls (or atleast the 2006 WC one) are great fun to play with. They swerve like a bitch
