Greatest Riffmaster ever???
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:04:39 PM »
Who is for you the best riffmaster in heavy-rock music history?
For me:
1.Tony Iommi
2.James Hetfield

If you're going to say Keith Richards or Jimmy Page or even Duane Allman, you have to list all of the delta blues musicians (Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, etc.) they "borrowed" half of their most famous riffs from.

And most of the others derived from them, in some form or another.  I love Slash and Izzy, but to me they derived from that family, even if they are the tops in it.  So, hmm... I guess I'll have to think on.  Maybe I'll pick later.

I don't go by that assbackwards untold rule to always go a layer deeper in time, just because there's an almost unseperable characteristic to music called "inspiration". Why stop at Son House and Muddy Waters and not mention Willie Wilson? If you take that flawed logic far enough, you eventually arrive at some medieval priest singing a monophonic liturgical plainsong, who should be mentioned everytime (modern western) music in any shape or form is discussed.

I would never mention Slash in this context though. He already was given disproportionate amounts of credit for being Izzy's musical parasite.

It's not assbackwards in this case though.  The Stones and Zeppelin lifted riffs directly from some of the artists I mentioned, often not even crediting them.  So how could Jimmy Page be listed as a great riff writer when he didn't even write some of his most famous riffs?
