that said male pheasants are real nice looking birds i used to do some work on an estate with pheasants bred for shooting. My uncle was the caretaker of the grounds so i leant a hand fairly often. It's a very undignified life the pheasants lead in my opinion i was never fond of purposefully creating and raising something simply for some rich bastard to kill it.

farm birds? they're game birds, you breed them to live in massive amounts of land so you and some friends can go shooting. You're not likely to see them anywhere beyond a rich mans property. They really have no use on a farm though.

:O Here they are bred in cages next to chickens, turkeys and peacocks... they are bred for eating :fpalm:

As far as suffering goes who are we humans to say when and how they suffer. If the animal is in good health and allowed to function normally whilst showing no signs of neurological distress then any idea of suffering is simply anthropomorphic bullshit.

I shouldnt even bother...  all animals are happier in their natural environment and that is affirmed by veterinarians and scientists

I can promise you they were bred and domesticated as game birds.

as for the last snide little comment kindly point me to publications of these veterinarians and scientists work it's all well and good saying that to be the case but i've also seen scientific claims that staring at tits makes you live longer, that the majority of people want to sleep with their parents and that children only learn to speak by copying parents...there are plenty of bullshit theories and studies with no internal validity out there and even more unsubstantiated claims.

i would also point out that anthropomorphism has no place in ethology. The studies may suggest less stress in the wild environments and there will be a logic that shows this with a set of results (which is the part that is important to read). And these studies are they field tests compared with lab tests? are the subjects backgrounds coherent with the needs of the study? how many species has the study been done on? All questions that need a specific answer before you can even think about suggesting a study as truth.

Beautiful birds dude. I have always wanted to just have a Cockatoo to live in the house with us, they become like a family member and act like a part of the family - you hear stories of them getting off their perch when its time to wake up, nudge bedroom doors open and waking up their favourite family member. Very very intelligent birds, but holy fuck when they're in our fruit trees they are so fucking loud!

I know you said you didn't like it already Andy but I totally agree, birds, large birds in particular should be out in the wild. Think about it, you probably spend at most 30 minutes a day with them. That leaves 23 hours and 30 minutes for them to get acquainted with that small cage, day in day out til their death

No offense either I have dogs and I feel the same way about them, kinda guilty even - difference is they're pack animals and just love being around us so I know they aren't having a depressed bored neutered life.

My logic? OK imagine life without working or enjoyable hobbies, ie. no purpose to your existence. In humans that usually leads to depression and mental ailments like that. Well isn't that kinda what happens to caged birds? They don't get to do what birds do.

Whatever, people normally just call me a greeny for not wanting to go spotlighting and kill Kangaroo's (half the time they end up filled with lead, hop away and die a slow death in agony, they're not weak animals), so if it makes me a mindless furry for not liking how humans treat the animals in the world then have at it

Well, I don't want to use Lupussy's resource ( ), but last weekend when the vet came home to check the dogs out (Brenda sometimes can not walk properly and Jackie is just too dumb to walk along the sidewalk yet, so the vet comes home) she went to the garden to see the birds and she said they were great there. Her only advice was to plant this thing inside and surrounding the cage

cause they're very shy animals and they like to hide themselves.  But there's no reason to feel sorry for them, they're not like macaws that grew in the jungle,  pheasans are poultry here. born in captivity and bred as food. few people appreciate them for thier beauty, the ones that breed them "as pets" either have them in cages or cut thier feathers so they cant fly away
