Kim Thayils playing reminds me of Tony Iommi in the best possible way (I dont mean "hes an Iommi clone" etc) things like the solo in "Never The Machine Forever"- fucking tasty shit, I dunno Ive always thought the guys playing was like Iommi somehow..and by that I mean I think Kim Thayil really grasps what is cool about electric guitar.

Im not a guitarist, but Thayils stuff sounds great (what its all about,reaLY)

I can see what you're saying, as vague as it may have been :tongue:

I came to the realisation that although Tom Morello is my favourite guitarist, Kim Thayil has had the biggest influence on me. All my fucking playing, and writing, is Thayil influenced. I love fucking about with different tunings, and all because of him. I love the whole heavy ass riffage without descending into 'METALLICAH FUCK YEAAAAH' kind of metal riffing, all because of him (and I can see where Iommi fits in here). Even my arrangements are kind of similar :?:

In fact, in a recent poll a couple of years ago (I don't remember which magazine), he's been voted the best European guitarist of all times.

Yet, Knopfler's and Clapton's mainstream fame underline this man "underratedness" (that's probably not even a word):
