Just downloaded the yet-to-be-released new album from Fleet Foxes. They should be considered the leaders in the clubhouse for best album of the year. I'd say they are on to something with their album cycle. 2011 is shaping up as a rather weak year, just like 2008 was when they released their first full-length. Helplessness Blues is solid, but I don't think it would've cracked my Top 5 if it had come out last year.

I feel that it's stronger than their debut album as far as consistency and ambition go. I also got this really awesome, sort of dark, almost medieval vibe from this album... loved that.

I downloaded Blind Melon's first two albums and Hole's Celebrity Skin
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Fuck you, whore.

Johan is not nuts. At least not anymore nuts than the rest of us. He is ruled by his own psychology, which includes jealousy that he cannot sing that high.

Amon Amarth-Surtur Rising
U2-U218
Children Of Bodom-Relentless, Reckless Forever
Oasis-(What's the Story) Morning Glory?
At the Gates-Slaughter of the soul
Apparently a new Amy Winehouse 'Greatest Hits' collection is coming out, but the tinfoil and spoons aren't included.

How's the Amon Amarth album?

brilliant it's cool because between "With Oden on our side" and "Twilight of the thunder god" they improved musically but on this album it's at a new musical level. Many times Johann uses some very guttural vocal levels, The guitars have really stepped up solo wise and even riff wise and there drummer has some fantastic beats that i thought he was incapable of and at times they seem to be using many different riff changes or key changes and solos that are consisted of many different sections that it's almost like listening to a heavier, more melodic version of the blackening by Machine head.

It's potentially the biggest melodic death metal album of the year, it's way better than the bodom album (which i did enjoy as it was kinda like hatecrew deathroll and blooddrunk crossed together).

Of course Arch Enemy have an album coming soon too and that should be great if rise of the tyrant is anything to go by...in flames are also working on an album but they are not a melodic death metal band as much as a bunch of sell outs with instruments.

Thanks. Sounds like I'd like it and guess I'll buy it. I was on the fence about it after reading some reviews but I'll trust your judgment.

In Flames were great and had loads of potential up until Clayman--it seems like they've lost all inspiration since then.

Arch Enemy have gotten better over time so I would expect the next album to build on everything they've done so far.

i would recommend it to anyone who likes melodeath it's a strong contribution from them and i say that knowing full well they've had a few sub par albums...they've always stuck true to what they like to do and how they like to do it but some of the albums (particularly the two before with oden on our side) were just very lacklustre and uninspired, but that's not what i got with Surtur Rising.

In Flames up until clayman where always my favourite melodic death metal band (although the best melodic death metal album in my eyes was Sentenced-Amok before they got Ville on vocals and turned into gothic metal Amok is a fantastic album that i'm surprised noone ripped off in later years). I wouldn't have said In Flames had potential because they very much were the finished product the three BIG melodic death metal bands have been described as the holy trinity before At The Gates is the father, In Flames the son and Dark Tranquility the holy spirit. The 3 bands made their mark and then pursued 3 very different futures but the only word of your sentence there that i contest is the term potential because on the jester race album at very least they were the perfect product and that album is easily the most iconic MDM album. More people may have chosen to rip off at the gates but Jester Race is really the crown jewel of the genre.

i agree about Arch Enemy i really want to see more use of synth in the new album (a concept i am not usually a fan of) after hearing it in "I Will Live Again" i'm really interested to hear if they could make a proper use of it into a song or two.
