You can never compare two kinds of music because it will just come down to peoples preference.
But I guess if you want any sort of answer you could always look at record sales.

thats why they had to break up. no band can keep going at such a level as they were constantly.

its the natural way of things. same as the beatles and led zeppelin - something had to give eventually. bands like the rolling stones have kept going through better and worse times and are inconsistent.

the short run they gave was amazing enough to set up a legacy of "what ifs" that will keep the band legendary forever.
I agree 100% I remember when  an interviewer ask Azl  if he sees himself with the band 15 years down the road and he replied by saying that He wasn't concern about staying with the band till 15 yrs later  as  he was more concern  about  Guns music  to never  be forgotten 20 yrs down the road generation  after generation to keep GUns n Roses music alive. He got what he wanted cause the fans old and new are as hungry for his music since  day 1!!!
With all the changing seasons of my life, maybe I'll get it right next time!

This whole debate is fun, but laughable as well! Grunge (I hate that term! Anyone that thinks Soundgarden and Alice n Chains were grunge need to just admit they get all their musical knowledge from VH1) didn't kill Hair Metal (No metal about it IMO) and Nirvana didn't kill off GnR. The masses and hair metal itself killed hair metal. It got too narssisitc and over the top, generation x was becoming self-aware of themselves and the world around them (ie Gulf War, Rock the Vote), they wanted more substance than those bands where puttiing out.

Funny to say that Nirvana killed GnR when both where extremley popular at the same time and both were on the same record label. Don't forget that the time when the UYI albums came out Axl was hanging out with Blind Melon and drapped in flannel! Everyone I knew, including myself were jamming to both. GnR killed itself and Cobain killed himself in effect killing Nirvana!

GNR wasn't killed. They broke up. If they hadn't we wouldn't even have this topic. It would be a moot point because they would still be cranking out albums that sold to people like us. But that wasn't meant to be. GNR will rise from the dead!!! Maybe a different line up, but still we will have music from who I consider is/was GNR. AXL ROSE.  Don't get me wrong, I miss hearing Slash and Izzy and Duff, but that's over. What I reallly want to hear is more of that incredible wailing voice of Axl's.  Sorry, just living up to my name.  AXL LOVER

nirvana wasn't all that popular as you may think today. bleach was hardly even noticed and nevermind was released in september 1991 but if i remember correctly it took Nr. 1 on the charts in december 1992. more than a year after it's release and guns were still on tour. if you look at guns n'roses concert sales in 1993 you'll see that they had a bigger audience than nirvana ever and people here are saying that nirvana killed off GN'R. get serious please. as someone else said, GN'R killed themselves and nirvana became "bigger" (i mean that in that time) for the second part of 1993 and 1994, it all lasted for 6 months at best. GN'R were long off the road when nirvana suposedly ruled the music world. if guns weren't popular and people turned against them then how did they play stadium shows at the end of a 2 year tour, something nirvana could never do.

and please stop this bitching about nirvana, half of their popularity is built on a fact that kurt killed himself. other than that, they have a few decent songs. end of story.
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

I have to agree with alot of what Fan said, but you can't compare Bleach with Appetite. Bleach was an indy release by (at that time) little known Subpop, while Appetite was released on Geffen. By the time Nevermind came out on Geffen, Appetite was what 3-4 years old?

But again I agree that GnR wasn't done in by Nirvana. However I will still say during the early 90's both where popular, though I concide that Guns was accepted more by the mainstream. Then again GnR was already an established act before Nirvana was introduced to the masses.

IMO opinion as others have stated it's apples and oranges.

Nirvana were a great band which I liked but Guns were always gonna come out at top. That early 90's there were some great bands, RHCP, RATM, Mudhoney, Metallica but it will be known as the battle between Axl and Kurt.
