Help Save Camden Market!!!!
« on: August 24, 2007, 11:42:42 PM »
Camden Council have given the go ahead for the wrecking balls to go in and destroy Stables Market in Camden.

This means the end of The Proud Galleries (served notice closing in a couple of weeks), the funky, vintage stores, Cyberdog, etc - you get the gist - one of the best things in all of London is about to be taken away from us.

What are they putting in its place? Boots, H&M and Topshop. I'm sorry to those who like these stores, but that is just not the place for them.

PLEASE help us stop them from doing this by signing the petition:

yooooo no offence guys and girls who love it but do any of you actually live there? theres probably a good reason why it's going you know i doubt the council would get rid of it if it made money, two of my mates live down there and say it's a pretty foul and only the tourists think it's a novelty. Anyway just throwing an alternative view point in the mix.

Yeah but guys, It's all well and good saying you visit there every weekend but do you have to wake up every morning and see it or live with it everyday you know? Would you be so bothered if there was a circus outside your house or in your back garden everyday and you couldn't do anything about it or a big pile of shit junkyard? I'm just saying i can see why alot of locals and the council do want to get rid of it cause i'm sure the residents of the area's opinions are more important than the people who just visit it when they feel like it.

As I said: I do live in Camden, and I sure as hell don't want another Boots or another Top Shop. You point would be valid if that was what people really wanted, but it isn't: It's money, money and more money. And it's happening all around London

Yet without capitalist conformity and blandness places like Camden Market wouldn't exist. Why not let it die so it can be reborn somewhere else out of the way yet bigger and better? The only reason Topshop, Boots etc. exist is because they provide a service it's not my fault Camden Market will be replaced because it's been made obselete  and i think my point is valid seeing it take's this issue to be highlighted on various internet sites to try and save it because the majority of locals want to see it gone.

But my point is that I don't think that the majority of locals want to see it gone. And that's why if you google "Save Camden Market" you get loads of results and petitions. I haven't spoken to all the locals, but I've spoken with a few, and that's the impression I get. Besides we are talking about a bunch of antiques shops, furniture shops, jewelley shops, second hand shops; small, independent traders that will be forced to go out of business. This has nothing to do with drug dealing problems and all that kind of shit in other areas of Camden. I honestly don't think that the locals want this particular part of Camden transformed in another shoping mall. I will be very sad if it happens

It's amazing how a few weeks ago no one gave a damn about camden market or the stables area yet cause it's appeared on the net suddenly everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

If there's a supply and demand the Independent traders will not go out of business they'll just have to relocate to were there demand can be met. My impression from everyone i talked to about it is well yes people will be losing there jobs but more jobs and revenue will be created for the area at the end of the day i've worked in a GAP store there aint nothing evil about it like everyone is making out ohhhhhhhhhh EVIL TOPMAN EVIL BOOTS well sorry lol but people gotta eat and those kind of businesses are going to provide alot more jobs and revenues than the market ever did.

I'm sorry for having my evil capitalist opinion of wanting to crush individuality but at the end of the day i'd rather see people who can't get a job and good wages get one than letting people who don't really factor into the local area equation keep the market for their own selfish benefit. It's not as if any of the stuff can't be found on EBAY or H&M these days as well.

I'm sorry, but, what's so amazing about it? It's not that people "didn't give a damm about Camden or the Stables market" before, it's just that we have now learnt, thanks to the net and the newspapers, what they plan to do with it, and we don't like it. I don't see what's amazing about that.

Why would they have to relocate when they have been there for many years? Why can "EVIL TOPMAN" or "EVIL BOOTS" go somewhere else? There are many places in Camden where they could set up shop and do business. Why destroy a fine piece of architecture and one of the most iconic and with more soul places in London?

About these kind of businesses bringing in more jobs and revenue, I seriously doubt it. Camden Market gets a lot of revenue from tourists, I don't think they will come to Camden to buy toothpaste at Boots...

Don't be sorry for your "evil capitalist opinion"; you have your point of view, I have mine. And mine is definitely not "enrich the rich". I don't know if you are referring to me when you say "people who don't really factor into the local area equation", but I live in Camden and I work in Camden, so I think I do factor. And I don't know if it is going to make any difference, but I'm going to fight this any way I can

No i know your a local cause you said earlier so obviously i value your opinion on the matter alot higher than people who aren't locals cause you know what your talking about and are part of the local equation.

I suppose you owned me there cause Topman and Boots can go anywhere it's not as if they can't afford to. I was just thinking of Urban Decay really sometimes you gotta make tough decisions to pull places up it's not as if all of London is super sleek and sexy but then on the other hand it's like abit of culture and something for the tourists so it's hard a call.

London would just be shit without it.
