set out a 5 by 5 grid. put one to five along the top (being the house numbers) then put nation, drink, cigar, pet, etc down the side. The first one to put in is clue number 8, the man in the centre house drinks milk. And then with a combination of informed, intuitive guesses and logic you'll be left with Gerry and the fishy.

I'd imagine an 8 yr old with enough time on their hands would have the logical ability to get the right answer if they had the grid in front of them. The 98% thing is probably pulled out of thin air (or more likely from the fact that you need an IQ in the top 2 percentile to qualify for MENSA so they will constitute that with genius).
