11-21-02 | Auburn Hills Detroit - Review
by Newfunk

Hello my fellow gunners. This isnt much of a review, just what I saw from my spot in the front of the mosh pit, at the Auburn Hills show.

The show started a little after 7:30 with CKY, I was skeptical of them from the start, hearing what kind of band they were. But Ill tell you this, this is a band that can really fuckin rock. They played 4 songs I believe, and at the end, in a true showing of rock n' roll starness.

The guitarist (guy with black hair and a black beard) got really pissed off at this guy that was heckling him in the front (stage center) after the set, the guitarist jumped off stage and went to the guy and started screaming at him, saying he was gonna fuck him up and all that. Eventually security got the fan thrown out and the guitarist back to where he was supposed to be (the set was over) but the guitarist guy ran off stage with his guitar and chucked it into the seats off to stage left. He attempted to come through the security lane (in front of the stage) to really jack hte guy up, but security took off the guitarist guy and took him back stage.Next up was Mix Master Mike. Ill tell you something, he really didnt seem to fit into the whole scheme of things, after CKY I was pretty hyped up, and MMM just kinda made me that much more tired and bored.

Finally, just before 11pm, the curtains were taken down revealing what must have been the best stage setup ever. They had 4 banners in the background with chinese symbols on them.

Then the familiar riffs to WTTJ and Axl exploded out wearing his now trademark black jogging pants and a Detroit Red Wings Brett Hull #17 jersey. He went through all the classics, then in a row played 4 new songs. (Chinese Democracy, The Blues, Madagascar & Rhiad and The Beaudoins).

Then the travesty of it all set in when they started to play Patience. It went okay from the beginning, you could tell that Bucket and Richards guitars were fucked up, and you could barely hear them. All you could really here was Brain and Fincks fills.

Axl sang through the song, obviously frustrated, only hearing Fincks fills, and a lot of time when there was nothing except Axl singing. Towards the end of the song, Axl was waving at the band to start playing, Tommy just burst out laughing as Fortus and Bucket were trying like hell to get back on cue. After the song, Axl did a quick "good night, were done" and spiked his mic down to the stage and took off.

The crowd was going nuts, my throat was sore, it was awesome. Expecting an encore, the fans were going nuts, chanting "Guns N' Roses" tehn the houselights came up and the background music kicked in, we then realized, we got jacked. I mean at least they played, they just scrapped the encore.

It was a great show though, CKY did great MMM can rot in hell, and Guns N' Roses played an awesome set.

But where I was at, people were lighting up joints up the wazoo, and everyone was drunk. My girl was flipping because the only concerts she ever went to was NSync and Backstreet Boys, and was never really at a rock concert, she was scared at the beginning, but she warmed up to it.

If your debating on getting tickets. Get them, or else you will miss the best rock show ever.

Oh, a little side note, Finck has joined the extension band wagon. I saw pictures recently where his hair was short, to where he looked like an old man. His hair is now just about as long as Axls, if not a bit longer.

Buckethead after his little act, with the nun chucks gave out little "Colonel Sanders" bobble heads and shit like that. It was pretty cool. Brain looked like a drug dealer, he was wearing like a doo rag under his hat, he looked like a thug.

Robin wore like a black suit vest, and at times (The beginning into to SCOM, he looked as if he didnt want to be there. He was pulling a Buckethead (not moving) as he just stared into the audience)

Theres probably more, that Im forgetting, but Im wasted, my ears are still ringing, and its now 5 hours after the show.

If I remember anything else, Ill write it down here. It was just an awesome show, everyone was larger than life. (Buckethead is one tall mother fucker, same with Finck) When I saw Fortus, I thought I was looking at Izzy Stradlin for a bit.

But, for CKY and Guns N' Roses, it was well worth the $75 bucks
