And then, just before
10pm, the entire arena was shrouded in darkness, the intro had begun....you
could just tell people we're gonna go wild! Moments later, the opening riff
to Welcome To The Jungle burst out across the arena, the crowd went crazy!
Robin Finck strutted out first wearing a dark garment and a dark brimmed hat
with his hair shoved in front of his face, surely a joke 'Slash-esque'
appearance! Hahaha! He changed back into his usual stage outfit by the end
of WTTJ. As the song kicked in, everybody was jumping up and down and
singing along. An immense opening to what was a truly AMAZING concert!
As soon as WTTJ finished, the band ripped straight into It's So Easy. The
crowd was still going ape-shit! Everyone really took in the band straight
away, and Axl was better than ever! 100%! Full of charisma and eye-ing
everyone up at the front of the crowd as they sang along.
At the end of Out Ta Get Me Axl screamed: "So you can BITE me!!!" once
again! Everyone loved the guy! He was immense! Robin, Richard and Ron were
all amazing too! Showing so much passion in their playing, especially in
Ron's Don't Cry solo where he waved people up, encouraged them to sing the
lyrics alongside his solo.
Robin later rolled into his solo, with the crowd in awe, taking it all
in...and then everybody went totally crazy as he burst into the SCOM intro!
It was as if it was the start of the concert again. Everybody was full of
energy, fuelled by the superior awesomeness of the band! The concert was
full of classic "you just HAD to be there" moments!
After Sebastian Bach's wild appearance for My Michelle, Axl said, "Let's
bring out another friend!........Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Izzy Stradlin!"
The crowd were absolutely in awe as he strutted out onto the stage and then
hugged Axl before kicking into Patience. People were worshipping Izzy, he
had the crowd in the palm of his hand when he appeared!
Izzy played the You Have To Move blues cover singing along with Axl as well,
which was a cool bonus!
The only flaw with the entire concert (and a very, very tiny one at that)
would be that the band only played one new song, The Blues. (But I was also
at the Download Festival in Donningtion last month, so for people like me
this wasn't so bad, because they played a lot of their new songs there).
Everyone really enjoyed it, but the band ought to have thrown in a couple
more new songs for good measure. But, this didn't really effect the crowd,
everyone was having a fricken great time!
Another of the concert's highlights was November Rain. All of the solos were
playing beautifully, real expressive and emotional., with everybody singing
along. There's certainly many very loyal GnR fans in Sheffield!
You Could Be Mine and Nightrain were absolutely awesome! I don't think there
was one person who didn't have one of, if not, THE best times ever at that
concert. Just before the end, the band disappeared in the darkness on stage
when the lights were dimmed, and again, the crowd began chanting,
"GUNS.....AND....ROSES!!!!" Moments later, they came back on and rocked the
place to kingdom come with Paradise City for the finisher! On top of the
totally immense performances from each and every member of the band, there
were loads of amazing pyrotechnics, with fireballs, huge catherine-wheels,
spark showers and the ticker tape showers!
A truly amazing and fantastic finish to a truly amazing and fantastic
concert!
(If you haven't been to a GnR concert on their current tour already, do
whatever you can to get to at least one of them! It will be the best concert
you've EVER been to! Mark my words!)
