07-02-06 | Goffertpark, Nijmegen 2006 Review 2
by Jeroen Berk

Sunday afternoon, a few hours before my second GNR show in just 8 days. Plugged in my mp3-player with just Guns songs and heading to Nijmegen which is only about 50 mins driving away from my home. This time I decided not to wait for hours and hours in the hot sun while listening to some sad bands, so at 18.00 o'clock I was on the pitch at the time the sun lost a lot of heat.

First thing I noticed was that I was easiliy able to walk to the front, about 7meters away from the stage. We sat down and let Alice In Chains play their set while enjoying watching people (read chicks) and the sun. Too bad I came by car so could not drink a couple of beers, water had to do it for me. At 8 o'clock AIC ended their set and the wait for Guns started, already used to it after waitiing 2 hours at Graspop. When the sun dissappeared behind the trees there were a lot of people busy so it all things seemed to start soon, that feeling got better when I saw a glimpse of Bumblefoot on stage.

Just a few minutes after half past 9 the openings tune started and the crowd really became mad! Great response from the crowd the first numbers and again I was really enjoying the fireworks. Axl sounded clear and raspy but most of all great and Ron and Tommy were really interacting with the crowd and got cool response. Most of the setlist was the same as the week before and every song was played very tight and you could hear Frank was already drumming for more than a week with the band.

Axl was in good spirits and was also talking about that he read that he didn't rant that much anymore (he really read the forums :)), but he said he was just in good spirit the last couple of weeks. My highlight of this show was the introduction of 'an old friend of mine'. I did not expected it at all but Izzy did came on stage and they started Think About You. I went completely mad because I was aware that this could be a once in a lifetime chance to see Izzy live! Izzy really seemed to enjoy and did came to the front of the stage a few times and interacted with the crowd more than he did in all in his previous GNR era!! Then Axl started to talk about the arrestment in Sweden that he also had 'calm down' and that he called the guy 'a fuckin' asshol or something like that'.
After Izzy came on stage I was really hoping for Used To Love Her but they went straight from Think About You via Patience and Nightrain into the encore; Paradise City. During Patience he calls a guy/girl in the audience 'a fuckin' idiot' and during the last part of Patience he is just standing still and finishes the song.

Paradise City was great you know it's the last song and the show will end, mixed feelings. Again it was a great performance of Axl and the whole band, they really sound as a unity...specially during the jams where you can see they really feel each other. Although it was a pity they didn't play TWAT, Madagascar, IRS or Rocket Queen it was again an unforgettable experience.
