That was cool... but not so cool as him coming out and singing My Michelle at NR. What I remember about that show / era is that you couldn't take your eyes off of AXL! The other guys were there... and cool also... but AXL was the energy. Even when Slash was solo wailing you could see AXL swaggering, stomping, spinning, fingering, whatever.. he was never silent. You just had to watch him. When he ran off stage you were wondering what was going on back there.. who was he yelling at.. what was he throwing?
Great to be able to say... SOME THINGS NEVER FUK'N CHANGE... maybe they just mature and develop. Thats exactly what I saw at NR!!!
From the ( now famous since 2001 RIO ) opening cord of WTTJ... and AXL's piercing scream ripping a new asshole in the entire crowd at NR... to the almost celestial ending to Paradise City... it was nothing short of perfect. Not too much pyro... unlike many of the other bands there... Guns just played the ass off of the songs people have missed for so long. I remember standing thinking.. fuck.. this sounds so much better than ever. I purposely watched and listen to each guy independently to get a feeling for them... what their role was. They were all fuk'n great. Brain.. awesome!!! So tight and hard playing. Was a milli second late on Rocket a few times.. that was weird.. but it is as though he wants to play it different as he was the same time 3 times. Sounded good.. only different. Tommy... god damn!!! He is seemless. Richard is strong, showy, true rock star guitar player. Ron.. amazing technician.. really great player.. but I remember wishing it was Buckethead... although he is a freak show and never completely fit the group and would be further out now that Robin is a bit more alive and human looking. Those early shows with Buckethead playing some of those solos were unreal. Dizzy is as GNR as AXL is by now... love that guy. Chris.. not sure what he is doing but from how full and amazing the sound is keep him there.. he must be adding something. Robin... I don't know what to say about Robin. That mofo comes to play!!! I think it was WTTJ or ISE.. Robin's guitar wasn't to his liking and he just pulled the strap over his head, slammed the guitar onto the floor and stormed off the stage. Naturally I thought.. oh fuck.. what now.. not already. He came directly back out around the other side of the stage with a new guitar just wailing away like he never missed beat. I thought... damn fuk'n cool! AXL!!! Axl was so completely cool for the show. The guy was telling jokes, saying funny shit, playing with the audience, etc... but completely maintaining that larger than life attitude he is best at. Like most fans.. I have seen about all there is to see when it comes to live footy of GNR. I have never seen AXL more intense... more powerful. He screamed unlike I have ever seen him. He ran, he leaped, he bounced, he spun, he fuk'n rocked the ass off of any other performer in the festival. This guy is 44 years old!?! UNREAL!!! I was there with my lady and she has never known GNR really.. knew some songs from airplay... but had no idea of the band. She probably couldn't understand my passion and commitment to seeing this performance. By the end of Live and Let Die she grabbed me and just said "holy fuck... he is amazing" !!! Any doubters in the crowd were quickly converted as they were witnessing the best concert of their lives.
I have never heard his voice sound better. Maybe we have just missed it so long.. but I think not. He seems to have found a mellow range that he was missing before... but still has the ability to shove it through the roof when needed. I must say I was really surprised by how much he ran and still could keep words and notes in the songs. I saw the RIO 01 and MTV tragedies... he is now where near where he was then. He ran end
to end on the stage and screamed his head off the entire way.. just like Toronto '91. Fifteen fuk'n years people. Oxygen!!! Fuk yeah he uses it... you would to if you were able to do what he is doing for 2 hours and 45 minutes every 2 - 3 nights. It's nuts to look at the early photos at Hammerstein only a month ago compared to him now. This guy gets in shape fast!!!
High points... of course November Rain... his voice was better than I have ever heard him and the solo was played brilliantly. Rocket Queen was sick!!! So funky and heavy... Brain is really amazing on this tune. Out ta Get Me... Axl was vicious on this song... spitting lines out so ferociously. Just about any solo Richard played as he doesn't stray too far from the original notes. Sebastian being schooled by AXL on My Michelle. I mean Bach can sing but he sounds like a little girl compared to AXL's growling angry screech.
Low points... it fuk'n ended!!!!
That's it... my review of the best rock show I have ever seen... and I have seen lots motherfuckers... but none like this. FIND TICKETS TO ANYWHERE and go!!!!
